State of care in British Columbia

In British Columbia, there are medical and surgical centres for treatment of obesity. All centres use a multidisciplinary approach with dietitians, nursing, mental health workers and physicians working together in the interest of the patient. The two surgical centres of excellence are the Richmond Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Program and the Victoria Bariatric Program.

Unfortunately, access to bariatric surgical care is extremely restricted in British Columbia with only 400 surgeries funded in the province annually. In comparison, Alberta does twice the volume of surgery, Ontario 3x and Quebec 5x the volume of surgery per capita. We are actively advocating to reduce these wait times in British Columbia by engaging with the Ministry of Health.
